For the past 15 years, Carol Jessen has worked in San Francisco as an artist. She attended the Academy of Art based in San Francisco and then took up private study lessons with Toshi Yoshida who taught her woodblock printing in Japan and William Lansberg who tutored her in design. Carol Jessen's preferred mediums are Japanese woodblock printing, pastel and oil painting and she exhibits her work both locally and internationally. In order to create and develop her oil paintings she starts with many small charcoal sketches, she then develops these by a full pastel drawing or by smaller loose oil paintings. The full scale image is then sketched in charcoal on a canvas the layer upon layer of paint is built up in order to achieve the bright vibrant colours. The canvas is then finally treated with a layer of damar varnish. Carol Jessen was commissioned to design and paint the Sausalito Art Festival Poster in 1994, this poster has subsequently sold out and has been reprinted again this year.
