John Meyer - Artist

John Meyer was born in 1942 and spent his childhood years growing up in a mining town, west of Johannesburg. He moved to London and worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines such as the Readers Digest, newspapers such as The Telegraph and The Times as well as numerous advertising agency work. In 1969 he returned to South Africa to work in the advertising industry as a specialist illustrator, the country's first full time job position of this type. John Meyer had his first one man show in 1972 and has been a full time painter ever since. He has exhibited in galleries both in the UK and America since 1978. He now lives and works in Cape Town and is recognised as the leading and most influential artist in the realist tradition. His moody, romantic, erotic and intriguing paintings are reminiscent of the Film Noire genre. John Meyer's inspiration comes from contemporary culture yet his work is rendered with a classicist's brush.
