John Waterhouse - Artist

John Waterhouse was born in Italy in 1849 and died in 1917. John Waterhouse is best known today for his work that illustrated mythology and literature. His father was an artist and John Waterhouse often assisted him in the studio.He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and his works around this time concentrated on a classical theme, similar to the style of Frederic Leighton.1880 and beyond saw John Waterhouse travelling to Italy where he started to paint genre scenes. In 1883 he was elected into the Royal Institute of Watercolours even though he primarily painted in oils. In 1884 he submitted work to the Royal Academy and again in 1888, 'Consulting the Oracle' and 'The Lady of Shallot' both these painting were bought by Sir Henry Tate. The 'Lady of Shallot' reflects his deep interest in Pre-Raphaelite themes at this time. John Waterhouse gained full membership to the Royal Academy in 1895. He has exhibited with the Grosvener Gallery which became the New Gallery, Christies have auctioned his works which were pictures offered to the Artist's War Fund. John Waterhouse painted up until his death from cancer in 1917.
